A snow-covered country scene outside a town or village. The building with a turret and stepped gables on the left appears to be a fortified house or castle, while another small house can be observed on the far right. Between the two buildings, nine figures are out in the snow, one of them is female and at least three of them are travellers.
Unlike his father, David Teniers the Younger specialized in peasant scenes in the style of Adriaen Brouwer. A prolific artist, he co-founded the Antwerp Academy and was Court Painter to the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in Brussels. It is unclear whether this particular panel was based on an authentic painting by Teniers, or simply painted in his style. It also shows some similarities with winter landscapes by a slightly earlier Flemish painter, Joos or Josse de Momper the Younger (1564-1635), but the prominence of the chimneysweeps makes a comparison with the work of Teniers more apt. A late eighteenth or early nineteenth-century date for this painting seems most likely.
