Date:1902 - 1915 (c.)
Description:
A colour postcard by Valentines from the Men of the Moment series. It is printed with a photographic portrait of Admiral John Fisher set against the Union Jack flag.
Admiral John Fisher (1841 - 1920) had an illustrious career in the Royal Navy. He served in the Crimean War (1859-60) and was promoted to the rank of captain in 1874. By 1904 he was First Sea Lord - commanding the entire Royal Navy. In this role he introduced radical improvements in naval standards and in the fleet. His work meant the Britain emerged as the strongest naval power in the run up to the First World War.
He was created Baron Fisher of Kilverstone in 1909 and retired the following year. Churchill managed to persuade him out of retirement in 1914 at the start of the First World War. However, in public opposition to Churchill's strategy in the Dardanelles, Fisher resigned in 1915, serving out the rest of the war on the Board of Innovations.
