Description:A colour postcard depicting a view of HMS Iron Duke and HMS Victory. Text at the bottom of the postcard reads 'ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY'. This was a signal sent by Admiral Horatio Nelson from HMS Victory at the beginning of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
HMS Iron Duke was the flagship of the Grand Fleet during World War One. The portrait in the top left is that of Admiral John R. Jellicoe. HMS Victory, built between 1759-1765, was the ship onboard which Admiral Lord Nelson was killed during the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. The portrait to the right is that of Admiral Lord Nelson. This postcard was probably produced during World War One to draw comparisons between the victory at Trafalgar and Britain's naval victories at the time.
