Description:
Colour photograph by John Hemmings inside the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa, c.1980s.
View of an empty Vortex bath. Vortex baths were used as early as the 1940s at the Royal Pump Rooms. A patient would sit on a stool in pre-prepared aerated water heated to 97 degrees farenheit. The metal shelf to the side was for patients to sit on to treat the feet and legs. The treatment was used to stimulate circulation and for polio patients. John Hemmings was a hydrotherapist at the Royal Pump Rooms in the 1970s.
