Colour photograph from the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa.
A view of a woman's legs in the Vortex bath.
The Vortex bath whirlpool method was designed at the Pump Rooms by the Matron and Chief Engineer in the 1940s. It was often used to treat polio or general aches and pains as well as to stimulate circulation. The patient could sit on the side and immerse their feet and legs or get into the bath to treat the entire body.
