Description:
Black and white photograph inside the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa, c. 1950s.
View of an adult hydrotherapy class taking place in the therapeutic pool. There are six female patients and two attendants, one male and one female. The patients would have been following the instructions of someone outside the pool, assisted by the attendants. Above the pool the bottom of ropes and slings can be seen, these were used to support the patients in the water.
The therapeutic pool replaced the original swimming pool which was installed in 1863. In 1890 it became known as the Ladies' pool when the De Normanville pool was built and used by men. In 1950 the Ladies' pool was partially filled in and a ramp was installed so that it could be used for physiotherapy treatments. Patients suffering from the effects of polio and arthritis as well as those injured in road traffic accidents received treatment in the warm, buoyant water. The slings and ropes above the pool were removed before the early 1960s when it was realised that they were not necessary as the water was buoyant enough. The therapeutic pool was converted into the Art Gallery during the refurbishments of 1997 - 1999.
