Description:

Leamington

By John Fairfax (1804-1877)

376mm x 284mm

This lithograph print depicts four scenes of Leamington Spa. Clockwise from the top right they are: the Royal Pump Rooms, All Saints Parish Church, the Episcopal Chapel and Warneford Hospital. Fairfax produced the print for his New Illustrated Guide and Directory. These prints were produced between 1834, when the Warneford Hospital was opened, and 1836.

John Fairfax was born in Warwick in 1804 and was apprenticed to a printer, bookbinder and bookseller. After a short period with the London Morning Chronicle in 1825 he moved to Leamington and established himself as a printer. In 1828 he co-founded the Leamington Spa Courier with James Sharp. The partnership broke up after only four months and Fairfax carried on as a printer, bookseller and newsagent. In 1835 he became part owner of the Leamington Chronicle and Warwickshire Reporter. However, a successfully defended libel suit in 1836 left him filing for bankruptcy. He emigrated to Sydney, Australia, in 1838 with his wife, mother and three children. In Australia he bought the Sydney Herald which he built up into one of the most respected newspapers in the Empire.
