Description:

A sepia photograph.

This image shows a view of Aylesford's Well and other buildings in front of All Saints Parish Church, Leamington Spa, taken between 1868-1881. Aylesford's Well was the first of seven saline springs that were found in Leamington. The pump was used to draw up saline water from the well. The water was considered beneficial to one's health, and depending on the ailment, patients were instructed to either bathe in or drink the water. Earl Aylesford believed that the water should be available to all, and a basin outside the well provided free spring water for the poor.
