Description:Sugar basin by Spode, Stoke-On-Trent, c.1820
A four-sided bone china sugar basin with a lid and two handles. The interior and exterior bear a decoration of blue, orange and gilded flowers. There is gilt edging to the rim, and a gilded rectangular knob at the top of the lid.
The Spode company was established by Josiah Spode in 1767. By 1776 Josiah Spode was the sole owner of the Spode factory, which is still in operation today. The factory remained under the ownership of the Spode family until the early 1830s.
