Uruguayan copper 40 centesimos, 1844
Diameter 38.5mm
The obverse features the national emblem of Uruguay, the Sol de Mayo (Sun of May), which refers to the May Revolution of 1810 that led to independence from Spanish rule. The Sol de Mayo has sixteen rays of alternate sizes and a face in the centre, which is very worn on this example. These are surrounded by a wreath decoration.
