Description:

Portuguese copper 20 reis, 1891

Diameter 30mm

The obverse features the bust of Carlos I facing right and the name 'ALVIS', possibly that of the designer or engraver. Around the outside is the inscription 'CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL', meaning 'Carlos I, King of Portugal'. The date is below flanked by dots. The reverse features the denomination within a wreath of olive to the left and oak to the right. Below is the mintmark for Paris, 'A'. This is flanked by the Privy Marks of the fasces for the Engraver General and the cornucopia for the Mint Director.
