The obverse features the monogram of Leopold I. There is a crown above and the date is below. The inscription around the outside reads 'LEOPOLD PREMIER ROI DES BELGES', meaning 'Leopold I King of the Belgians'. The reverse features a seated lion looking backwards over its shoulder with its paw on the Belgian Constitution. Above is the Belgian national motto, 'L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE', meaning 'Strength through Unity'. The denomination is below. Also at the bottom of the coin is the name 'BRAEMT F', possibly that of the designer or engraver.
