Tanganyika copper 1 pesa, 1891 (Hejira date 1308)

Diameter 25mm

Tanganyika was a German territory in East Africa which today forms mainland Tanzania. The obverse features the German Coat of Arms - an eagle with wings outspread, a cardinals hat over its head and a medal collar around its neck, on its chest is a smaller shield bearing an eagle with a crown, sceptre and orb. The inscription around the outside reads 'DEUTSCHE-OSTAFRIKANISCHE GESELLSCHAFT', which is German for 'German East Africa Company', and the date is below. The reverse features the Arabic title of German East Africa, Sharaka(t) Almaniya, as well as the Hejira date within a central ring. There is a wreath around the outside.
