The obverse features the bust of William III facing right. The inscription reads 'GULIELMUS.III.DEI.GRA' Latin, abbreviated meaning 'William III By the Grace of God'. The obverse features four shields topped by four crowns surrounding the lion rampant of the House of Orange. The top shield bears the three lions of England, the right hand shield the lion rampant of Scotland, the bottom shield bears the three fleur-de-lys of France and the left hand shield the harp of Ireland. The inscription reads 'MAG.BR.FRA.ET.HIB.REX.1696', Latin, abbreviated for 'King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'.
