English brass token, 1849

Diameter 20mm

This brass token was produced for gaming or advertising. The obverse features the bust of Queen Victoria facing left and the inscription 'VICTORIA QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN' with the date below. The reverse features a figure on horseback wearing a crown with three plumes, from the heraldic badge of the Prince of Wales. The figure is surrounded by a garter with a crown above and bearing the motto 'ICH DIEN', German for 'I Serve'. This is the Prince of Wales' motto. The inscription around the outside reads 'PRINCE OF WALES MODEL HALF SOVrn' (sovereign). A hole has been punched out of the top of the coin, this is not part of the original design.
