Description:

English silver sixpence, 1825

Diameter 23mm

The obverse features the bust of George IV facing left. The inscription reads 'GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA', Latin for 'George IV by the Grace of God', with the date below. The reverse features a lion on a crown. The rose of England, shamrock of Ireland and thistle of Scotland are underneath. The inscription, barely legible on this example, reads 'BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR', Latin meaning 'King of the Britains Defender of the Faith'. There is a hole punched in the top, possibly so that it could be worn around the neck, this is not part of the original design.
