Irish oval brass medal, 1879

Medal struck to commemorate the apparition at Knock Parish Church, County Mayo, of Our Lady, St Joseph and St John on 21st August 1879. The obverse features Knock Parish Church within a central oval ring and the inscription 'VIEW OF THE CHAPEL AT KNOCK/ WHERE THE APPARITION TOOK PLACE'. The reverse features St Joseph, Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist on a cloud surrounded by stars. To their right is a box with a horse or donkey bearing a cross on top. The box contains a cross over a radiate heart. The inscription around the outside reads 'APPARITION AT KNOCK CL MAYO AUG 21 1879/ HOLY MARY ST JOSEPH AND ST JOHN PRAY FOR US'. There was once a loop for suspension at the top which has been broken off.
