Medal struck in commemoration of the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre in Paris, 1572. The obverse features the bust of Pope Gregory XIII and the inscription 'GREGORIUS.XIII.PONT.MAX.AN.I' with the initials 'F.P.' under the bust. The reverse features an angel advancing to the right towards a number of dead bodies. The angel is holding a cross before it and carrying a lowered sword in its right hand. The inscription reads 'UGONOTTORUM. STRAGES', 'Huguenots Slaughtered', followed by the date of the massacre. The St Bartholomew's Day Massacre on 24 August 1572 was the first in a series of violent attacks on Huguenots by Catholics in France in the 16th Century.
