The obverse features the bust of Pedro II, ruler of Brazil from 1831 - 1889. The date is below and the encircling inscription reads 'PETRUS II D. G. C. IMP ET PERP. BRAS. DEF', Latin abbreviated meaning 'Pedro II By the Grace of God Emperor and Perpetual Defender of Brazil'. The initials 'C.L' are below the bust, possibly those of the designer or engraver. The reverse features the Coat of Arms of the First Empire of Brazil - a sphere superimposed on a cross, the sphere is encircled by 19 stars representing the Brazilian provinces, there is an imperial crown above and a branch of coffee to the left and tobacco to the right. The denomination is below flanked by the Parisian Privy Marks of an anchor for the Engraver General and a bee for the Mint Director.
