Description:

Spanish silver 2 reales, 1828

Diameter 24mm

The obverse features the laureate bust of Ferdinand VII (1808-1833) facing right and the inscription 'FERDIN.VII.DEI.GRATIA', 'Ferdinand VII By the Grace of God', with the date below. The reverse features the Spanish Royal Coat of Arms, a crown above a shield with a central oval escutcheon. The shield is divided into four parts, two of which bear the embattled castle of Castile and two the lion rampant of Leon. Between the third and fourth quarters is a pomegranate representing Granada and the central oval bears three fleur-de-lys for Bourbon-Anjou. The denomination, 'R/2', is divided by the shield and the mintmarks, 'S/JB', are similarly divided. The 'S' is for the Seville mint and the letters 'JB' represent the mintmasters Joaquin Delgado Diaz and Benito de Roxas (1824-1833). The inscription around the outside, barely legible on this example, reads 'HISPANIARUM.REX', 'King of Spain'.
