Description:

English Warwickshire copper halfpenny token, 1791

Diameter 30mm

The obverse features a male bust facing left with 'WARWICKSHIRE' inscribed around the outside. The reverse features a seated female figure carrying the cornupia in her left arm. She faces left and raises her right arm towards a rigged ship at sea. Tokens such as this were produced from 1787-1797 when there was a shortage of regal copper coinage. This led the Anglesey Mines Company to produce its own copper penny and halfpenny tokens, a practice which became widespread during the period.
