Description:

French silver franc, 1872

Diameter 22mm

The obverse features a helmeted female bust facing left, probably that of Liberty or Marianne. She is flanked by the inscription 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE.' and there is a six pointed star above her head. Underneath is the name E.A.Qudinee, possibly that of the designer or engraver. The reverse features a wreath of olive and oak branches entwined. Inside the wreath is the denomination with the date below. Around the outside is the motto 'LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE', 'Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood', separated by four dots. At the bottom is the Paris mintmark, 'A', and the Parisian Privy marks of a bee for the Mint Director and an anchor for the Engraver General.
