Date:1801

Description:

Papal States Vatican, copper baiocco, 1801

Diameter 33mm

The obverse features the coat of arms of the Holy See. This consists of a crown with two keys below that are crossed and interlaced at the rings. This is combined with a shield bearing the coat of arms of Pope Pius VII. The inscription reads 'SACROSAN.BASILICAE.LATERAN.POSSES', although it is very worn on this example. The denomination is at the bottom. The reverse reads 'PIUS/SEPTIMUS/PONTIFEX/MAXIMUS', Latin for 'Pope Pius VII'. This inscription appears above the date which is in Roman Numerals. There are three helmeted heads in a row at the bottom of the coin.
