Description:

Papal States Vatican, copper 1/2 baiocco, 1851

Diameter 23mm

The obverse features the coat of arms of the Holy See. This consists of a crown with two keys underneath that are interlaced at the ring. This is combined with a shield bearing the coat of arms of Pope Pius IX. The inscription reads 'PIUS.IX.PONT./MAX.ANN.VI.', Latin for 'Pope Pius IX Year Six'. The reverse features the inscription '1/2 BAIOCCO 1851'. The letter 'B' is the mintmark for Bologna. There is full wreath around the inscriptions on the reverse.
