The obverse features the bust of George VI. The inscription reads 'GEORGIUS VI REX IMPERATOR', Latin for 'George VI King and Emperor'. The reverse features a rigged ship at sea and the inscription 'SOUTH-AFRICA. 1942. SUID-AFRIKA'. The denomination abbreviated to '1D.' is below.
