Description:This wooden recliner was used in the Hammam at the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa. The Hammam, or cooling room, was one of four rooms that made up the Turkish Bath. To receive the full benefits of the Turkish Bath patrons visited three hot rooms, which were like modern saunas. The heat in the hot rooms eased tension in the muscles and contributed to a sense of wellbeing. The cooling room was the last room to be visited, here the patron would relax for one hour on the wooden recliner.
