Description:This bottle contained saline water from the springs at Leamington Spa. Saline, or salty, water has been used for medicinal purposes in Leamington for over 500 years. At the Royal Pump Rooms, patients bathed in saline water as part of hydrotherapy treatments. The water was also drunk, and could be used to treat a variety of ailments including stomach aches and muscular rheumatism. Sulphurous water and chalybeate water, containing iron, were also used in treatments at the Royal Pump Rooms.
