Date:1865 - 1880 (c.)
Description:This black lace mantilla - worn over the head and round the shoulders - belonged to the local author George Eliot. She can be seen wearing it in a chalk portrait drawn in 1865 by Sir Frederick Burton (1816-1900); and in an ink drawing by Lowes Cato Dickinson dated 1872. Both portraits are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London. George Eliot (born Mary Ann Evans) was a local authoress based in the Coventry and Nuneaton district, from 1819-1880.
