Description:Stories of strange birds and beasts were brought back to Shakespeare’s London.

In Shakespeare's The Tempest Trinculo, finding 'the monstrous' Caliban on the beach speculates on how an Englishman could make a fortune with tales of monsters 'Were I in England now, as once I was, and had but this fish painted, not a holiday-fool there but would give a piece of silver. There would this monster make a man.' (2,2, lines 29-30).
