Description:Ships from Shakespeare’s England explored the world.

The sailing vessels that traded up the river Thames to London and set off from the English Channel, or from West country ports, were familiar to Shakespeare. The Tempest opens with the Boatswain and other sailors adjusting sails in the face of the oncoming storm that is to wreck them on Prospero’s island. ‘yare, yare, take in the top-sail, tend to the master’s whistle... down with the top-mast, yare, lower, lower, bring her to try wi' th' main course...' (1,1, line 1-34).
