Date:1619
Description:Ships from Shakespeare’s London sailed to the Caribbean. As English settlements were established in the Americas pamphlets describing their experiences were published in London. The slave trade between Africa and the Caribbean islands was begun by Englishman John Hawkins in 1562 and the triangular routes brought English ships with goods from the colonies back to Bristol and London. Shakespeare may have based Caliban, in The Tempest, on the native peoples, or the slaves of the Caribbean colonies. Full title: America Map of the Americas, from Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius Atlas, France, 1619. (hand-coloured)
