Description:Macbeth: the text as it first appeared in print. Macbeth is one of the ‘First Folio’ plays for which there was no previously printed text. Like those of his contemporary fellow playwrights, Shakespeare’s plays were written for a specific acting company and copies of the manuscripts belonged not to the author, but to the Company sharers. It was these manuscripts that John Heminge and Henry Condell gathered together for publication by the Jaggard printing house in the years following Shakespeare's death. See: Macbeth, 1,1.
