Description:Shakespeare's first and last: The Tempest. The Tempest was almost the last play written by William Shakespeare, but in the ‘Folio’ edition it appears first. There was no ‘quarto’ version but the text contains few errors and it is thought that the playwright may have prepared a clean manuscript copy ready for printing. One can speculate that perhaps Shakespeare considered The Tempest his favorite play, or his most complete drama, following, as it does, the classical unities of time, place and action. See: The Tempest, 1,1. Full title: William Shakespeare, Mr William Shakespeares comedies, histories & tragedies published according to the True Originall Copies, London, printed by Isaac Jaggard, and Ed[ward] Blount, 1623. The 'Ashburnham' copy owned by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
