Description:A disobedient servant in Shakespeare's England.

Every Elizabethan home employed servants to assist with the daily tasks of housekeeping. Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, The Taming of the Shrew and Coriolanus all contain comic scenes involving kitchen staff. The mistress of the house might occasionally need to reprimand a servant as this engraving shows.

See: The Comedy of Errors, 3,2, lines 96-161; The Taming of the Shrew, 4,1, lines 108-144; Coriolanus, 4,5, lines 11-53.
