Description:The source for Shakespeare's Macbeth. Shakespeare always amended and used his sources to suit the needs of drama. An example of this is Holinshed's tale that Banquo and others, as well as Lady Macbeth, supported the murder of Duncan, but Shakespeare makes this the Macbeths' sole knowledge, although Banquo is killed because he knows the prophesy and suspects Macbeth has not come fairly to the throne: ‘thou hast it now, king, Cawdor, Glamis, all as the weird women promis’d; and I fear, thou play’dst most foully fo't.' (3,1, lines 1-10). Full title: Raphael Holinshed, The firste [laste] volume of chronicles of England, Scotlande and Irelande.
