Description:Contemporary writers in Shakespeare’s County. William Shakespeare's native county of Warwickshire in the English Midlands was illustrated in the long poem, Polyolbion, by Michael Drayton. The map shows the valley of the river Avon and the main towns of Coventry and Warwick. The modern city of Birmingham did not become a major settlement until the industrial revolution in the eighteenth century, and does not figure in the Elizabethan county.
