Description:A falconry handbook on a subject well known by Shakespeare. Falconry was a popular sport with the Elizabethan gentry and nobility. Latham’s handbook describes all aspects of ‘the princely art’ of training a hawk to seek and catch small animals. When Viola talks about the court fool, Feste, she compares him with the wild, untrained hawk which takes every opportunity of prey ‘Like the haggard, check at every feather that comes before his eye’ (Twelfth Night 3,1, lines 63-64). Full title: Simon Latham, Latham's falconry, or the faulcons lure, and cure: in two bookes. The first, concerning the ordering and training up of all hawkes in generall; especially the haggard faulcon gentle. The second, teaching approved medicines for the cure of all diseases in them. Gathered and published by Symon Latham. London, J [ohn] B [eale] for Roger Jackson, 1615 [-1618]
