Description:A smart 19th century binding on a Shakespeare 'quarto'. The ‘quarto’ editions of Shakespeare’s work were published as slim pamphlets. The original binding of this volume, would probably have been simple calf leather boards. These were discarded in the nineteenth-century when the book’s special rarity was recognised and the volume was handsomely rebound in scarlet goatskin by the 'Bedford' Bindery. A simple gilt rule, with corner ornaments decorates the boards, while elaborate gold tooling has been skilfully added to the spine. Full Title: William Shakespeare, A midsommer nights dreame. As it hath beene sundry times publikely acted, Written by Willaim Shakespeare. [London], Printed by James Roberts, 1600. [i.e. William Jaggard for Thomas Pavier, 1619].
