Description:A ‘Pavier’ quarto of Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice title page. This title-page of The Merchant of Venice ‘quarto’ summarises the plot in its descriptive sub-title. The prospective purchaser, or reader is reminded that the ‘historie’ is about Shylock, and about Portia and her caskets, as well as the merchant of the title. This edition was published by Thomas Pavier in 1619, without permission from the Stationer’s Company, and therefore was disguised by using the date of the first edition which had appeared in 1600.
