Description:Garden detail replaced in an amateur way by an owner of a volume contemporary with Shakespeare. This copy of the first edition of Gerade’s Herball has original hand-colouring of all the illustrations of flowers and plants in the volume. The volume’s possible later owner, and creator of the substitute title-page has initialed his work with ‘J.R.F’., or ‘I.R.’. It is by such additions to a volume that it becomes personalised, and may provide evidence, and a close link between the reader and former owners of a prized text, even if it is at the expense of fine printing that has been lost.
