Description:The front board of a Shakespearian sourcebook.

The original owner of this book probably purchased it from the printer, a friend of William Shakespeare, Richard Field, or from his publisher Thomas Wight. He chose a simple full-leather binding with plain lines, (‘blind’ rules) embossed with a heated metal roller tool along the edges of each board. The spine retains the six ridges of the original cords, sewn during the book's compilation, over the page folds of each ‘gathering’, or group of pages.

Full title: Plutarch, The lives of the noble Grecians and Romaines compared together Translated out of Greeke into French by James Amiot... and out of French into English by Sir Thomas North, Imprinted at London by Richard Field for Thomas Wight, 1603.
