Description:A Printer's header ornament on a Shakespeare sourcebook.

The printer’s ornaments in many Elizabethan books have elaborate detail. In this volume hunters with their dogs confront a bear while coiled snakes hide in the decorative foliage. The symbolism might well be applied to Shakespeare’s interpretation of the English history he found in the text, as the English nobility confront their monarch in civil wars in Henry VI, or the king attempts to rule with absolute power, in Richard III.
