Description:A binder's ornament on a book contemporary with Shakespeare.

The sturdy, leather binding on this copy of Ortelius' small atlas is the original which was probably created for the book’s first owner, whose choice of ‘blind-stamped’ ornament, is impressed, with a heated metal tool. No gold or other infill, is added, leaving the impression 'blind', or empty, on both the front and back boards.

Full title: Abraham Ortelius his epitome of the theatre of the worlde. Now latlye renewed and augmented. The mappes all newe grauen by Michael Coignet. London, printed for Ieames Shawe, 1603.
