Description:Drinks available in Shakespeare's time. The regular drink of Elizabethans was cider, ale (which was not strong beer), or for the more wealthy, wine was imported from France, or Germany. Water was used in cookery, but it was seldom drunk, unless from a spring, or safe well. Elsewhere it was frequently impure. Herbal infusions were traditional remedies but cows’ milk was used only for butter and cheese. Sheep's milk was a drink for the elderly, or the infirm. Tea, coffee and chocolate were not regularly imported to England until later centuries. Full title: Richard Day, A Booke of Christian Prayers collected out of the auncient writers and best learned in our tyme, worthy to be read with earnest mynde of all Christians in these daungerous and troublesome dayes', London, John Daye, 1581.
