Description:Christian charity offering shelter, in Shakespeare's time. Strangers traveling in the countryside were often made welcome, as Autolycus, Polixenes and Camillo find at the feast in the play of The Winter’s Tale, or in Pericles the shipwrecked queen Thaisa, is taken in by local people, who give her a home at the temple: ‘a niece of mine shall there attend you.’ (3.4), while her baby, Marina, is left with friends of King Pericles at Tarsus: ‘I charge your charity withal, leaving her the infant of your care'.
