Description:Women in the home in Shakespeare's time.

The role of women, though legally inferior to men, was in effect recognised of equal importance as they were expected to carry out all the responsibilities of running a home. This included organising the household servants, planning and cooking meals, overseeing the garden and its plants, of which the housewife used some for distilling family remedies. In times of illness it was the women who were first to administer care, for trained doctors were few, especially in the country. All this was usually in addition to bearing and raising several children.
